Mexico City 2024: A Month of Color, Growth, and Good Habits

Mexico City, Mexico

When I left San Francisco and landed in Mexico City, I was in a different headspace than the last time I’d been here.

This time, I had just started meditating—something sparked by reading Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself by Joe Dispenza. That book opened a door to self-awareness I hadn’t walked through before.

And almost instantly, I began noticing things I had missed the first time around.

Mexico City felt more alive. Not just the parties and mezcal—but the color, the architecture, the way people live. It felt like the city had always been vibrant… I just hadn’t been fully present to see it.

Experiences That Stayed With Us

Over 30 days, we took our time and explored with intention.

  • Cheered on masked chaos at Lucha Libre

  • Wandered through the Palacio de Bellas Artes and a handful of smaller museums

  • Soaked in the views from Chapultepec Castle

  • Treated ourselves to a fine-dining night at Rosetta

Food, Coffee, and Gut Trust

This time around, we didn’t shy away from street food. A year ago, someone warned us we’d get sick. But with a bit more experience and some trust in our gut (literally), we embraced it.

We started drinking the local yogurt drink Lala early on to help our systems adjust. It worked. And the flavors on the street? Totally worth it.

Most mornings, we’d walk long stretches just to find the right coffee spot. That ritual became one of our favorites.

Rebuilding Habits

This trip also marked a quiet return to fitness.

I made it to the gym 11 times, and our daily average step count was over 10,000. The movement felt natural, not forced. Like my body was remembering something important.

I also got back into reading. Fiction first—just to relax—then slowly into nonfiction again. Atomic Habits was the first book I picked up. Fitting, given how much this trip reminded me of the power of small changes.

What’s Next

Sasmini and I are off to Malaysia next. Kuala Lumpur has always felt like a place of recovery for us—good food, slower pace, and time with family and friends.

After that, we’ll head to Chiang Mai, Thailand, and settle in there until mid-January.
